Smart cities are usually synonymous with big data, technology and sensors but all too often we see overkill. Not everything needs a technology angle to make infrastructure faster, slicker, cheaper or more convenient. A case in point was an IBM ad campaign a few years ago (see below) – simple and effective – little or no technology required in these installations. IBM knew what needed to be done (and didn’t need Watson to help them).

Time Out and crowdfunding platform GoFundMe are taking this idea to another level but leaving it up to the people to decide with their online competition; ‘Make London Better‘. Londoners from all walks of life (individuals, organizations or community groups) are able to submit their ideas to improve their surroundings or the entire city. Two ideas will then be selected with an be given GoFundMe pages pre-loaded with £5,000 and support to raise more cash for the projects and turn them into reality.
